Problems We Solved in October
Fun fact: In our monthly Client Newsletter, we give full breakdowns of our clients’ questions and problems and the answers/solutions we give. You can also get it when you become one🫣
Here’s a look at a few situations we handled in October:
We handled 1099 for a Client: With year-end approaching, a client wanted clarity on how Chore supports 1099 filings. Our team helped streamline vendor payments by ensuring contractors were paid through platforms like Gusto or Rippling (which auto-generate 1099s). For other clients paying directly through banks, we organized W-9 collection, vendor reviews, and payment summaries, then connected them with Track1099 for efficient filing.
We advised on best practices for an Employee Handbook when there’s no HR department: Several lean startups asked who should be listed as the HR point of contact when they don’t actually have one. We advised referencing positions, not people, and creating flexible HR aliases like hr@company.com that can be easily reassigned as the company grows. Successfully, we helped create future-proof handbooks that scale with the team.
Hiring international contractors without a platform: A client needed to hire a contractor in Argentina without using platforms like Remote or Deel. We guided them through collecting W-8BEN forms, setting up secure payments via Wise, and drafting compliant contracts that defined independent status clearly.
We advised a client looking to know how R&D tax credits are paid out: Clients qualifying for R&D tax credits asked how payouts actually work. We explained how profitable companies use credits to offset income tax, while loss-making ones apply them against future payroll taxes through Forms 6765 and 8974.

📅Monthly roundup
Top Stories We Covered in October
We broke down California’s new AI hiring law, which now holds companies legally responsible for algorithmic discrimination under the state’s Fair Employment and Housing Act. Founders using automated screening or HR tools must now run bias audits, document decisions, and ensure vendor accountability. It’s California’s way of making “AI compliance” the new HR hygiene.
We unveiled Ollie: Chore’s AI-powered operations co-pilot that acts as a 24/7 Chief Operating Officer in your pocket. Ollie merges human expertise with machine intelligence to turn manual workflows into seamless systems of record and action, giving founders instant operational insights across tools like QuickBooks, Carta, and Gusto.
We covered California’s new SB 711 bill, simplifying state tax filing for residents and small businesses by aligning with federal rules for the first time in a decade. The law cuts red tape for startups handling multi-state filings.
We reported on the IRS naming Jarod Koopman as Acting Chief Tax Compliance Officer. Known for his crypto and digital forensics expertise, Koopman’s appointment signals a stronger push toward digital asset enforcement and cross-border compliance.
We spotlighted new Chore partnerships with Brex and Grasshopper. Founders now get $1,000 in credits when signing up through Brex, and $1,200 with Grasshopper, both offering faster, smarter financial tools to help startups scale without the spreadsheet chaos.
